Maigret: Create User Folders Based on Username Searches on Thousands of Sites
Maigret is an open-source, cross-platform tool for creating user profiles using only username searches. The program is free and does not require any API or configuration.
The command line tool checks if the specified usernames exist on online platforms and creates reports based on the results. The sites consulted by Maigret are among the most popular sites in the world; the list includes social media sites, shopping sites, streaming sites, torrent sites, I2P sites, and many other sites.
The app’s main features include the ability to perform checks for multiple usernames at once, run recursive searches, and limit searches by tags or geographic locations.
Maigret runs its checks on 500 popular sites by default, but users can run a search on the 2500 sites it supports. Operation is simple and straightforward.
Windows users can download an executable file from the GitHub repository. Linux users can install Maigret using pip or Docker, or launch it from the cloned repository.
Here are the instructions for Windows:
- Once you have downloaded and extracted the Maigret archive, open a Terminal window to the location. In File Explorer, change the path to CMD and press the Enter key.
- Execute the command mincet_standalone.exe USER1 –pdf. Replace USER1 with the username you want to verify.
- Wait for the app to complete the search and create a PDF report of its results.
To search for multiple usernames, add them after USER1, for example, mincet_standalone.exe USER1 USER2 USER3 –pdf.
To search all sites, use the -a parameter. You can also create an HTML report using –html, limit searches using –tags TAG1, TAG2, or print all sites where the username was not found.
The results are highly dependent on the user name(s) specified. There is a high chance of false positives, especially for short or common usernames. Other Internet users may have chosen user names on some of these sites.
Note that you can search for email addresses, which is less prone to false positives. Maigret will search cumulatively for all user names that it detects during its searches and which are associated with the specified user names.
Closing words
Maigret is a powerful tool for creating a profile based on usernames. Like many comparable tools, it has the potential for abuse and usefulness. Internet users could use it to find out if their user name is listed on sites they wish to register or to carry out checks to find out where their e-mail address is registered.
For internet users who value privacy, it is a good reminder to set not only unique passwords when creating accounts, but also unique usernames and email addresses, if possible.
Now you: what do you think of Maigret?
