CONNEAUT, Ohio — The Cleveland Museum of Natural History is purchasing a 14.5-acre tract in Ashtabula County that features stunning waterfalls and a creek renowned for its biodiversity.

Over the years, the museum has acquired several dozen natural areas in northern Ohio with the primary goal of protecting them from pollution and encroachment.

This most recent contribution to that effort includes an upland forest that harbors steep ravines, one of which channels a section of Bear Creek, a meandering creek that empties into Conneaut Creek near the State Road Covered Bridge.

The soon-to-be-acquired land sits downstream from two other plots along Bear Creek that the museum already owns and collectively calls Floyd Preserve.

“The idea is to protect as much of Bear Creek as possible,” said Garrett Ormiston, preservation operations manager for the 66 natural areas the museum owns or manages in northern Ohio.

It’s also a small step toward a much larger goal of protecting the health of Lake Erie. Conneaut Creek, a popular destination for rainbow trout anglers, empties into the lake.

“This is a step towards ensuring long-term water quality for our water source,” said Gavin Svenson, scientific director of the Natural History Museum.

The topography of the newly acquired parcel rivals that of public natural sites in northeast Ohio, including Buttermilk Falls in Cleveland Metroparks’ North Chagrin Preserve.

An impressive waterfall emerges dramatically after passing Bear Creek under State Road. The creek cascades down a washboard-shaped shale slope before making a sharp right turn at the base of the falls and passing under a shale cliff.

The falls can be a trickle or a torrent depending on the time of year. Judy Smith, owner of the nearby Bear Creek Bed and Breakfast, said she saw the creek flow near the top of the bridge before plunging into the falls, “and it’s just an amazing site.” The falls, which will remain on private property after the sale, are easily visible from the bridge and a short walk from State Road.

But equally impressive is what lies in the water.

Bear Creek is very clean with little to no agricultural runoff upstream, Ormiston said. As a result, the creek has a considerable diversity of aquatic life which includes redside dace, a colorful minnow with a red bar along its side.

The streams that feed Bear Creek are also home to a variety of salamanders, including northern slimy, Allegheny Mountain dusky, northern dusky and northern two-lined varieties, Ormiston said, which, like redside dace, are indicators of good health. water quality.

“Salamanders and amphibians in general are really the canaries in a coal mine” when it comes to stream health, Ormiston said.

A second unnamed stream running through the plot includes an even taller waterfall, but accessing it requires a deeper hike through private woods. In fact, Huffman, when asked about the falls, said he didn’t know he was there.

Another prominent feature of the property are the green needle hemlocks, which stand out even more in winter when the leaves have fallen from the oaks and other deciduous trees in the forest. Many trees are perched on the edge of the cliffs or at odd angles.

Walking through the plot, one encounters a variety of oddities, including striped maples. Striped maple grows as a weed in Pennsylvania but only spreads to three townships in Ohio, Ormiston said.

Also seen are ferns, both the evergreen wood and Christmas species, and a delicate little plant called ground pine that pierces through the tangled leaves that cover the forest floor.

During a recent visit to the site, Ormiston pointed out a stand of hemlocks that would be an ideal meeting place for owls as the needles provide year-round cover from their predators, such as eagles. “I’m a natural,” I think, with unbearable smugness. “A bona fide detective!” I watch the floor eagerly as my companion, metal detecting guru Andy Sampson, cuts a square hole with a sturdy shovel and pulls out a coin-sized disk. Wiping mud from its surface, it asks, “Do you know what it is?” “A gold coin, a bronze brooch… even a piece of jewelry, perhaps? No. It’s a shotgun cap. “Oh.”

I just experienced what could be described as pride in front of a hole – something my fellow Detective Nigel Richardson understands all too well if his wry smile is anything to say.

The travel writer became addicted to “happy beeps”, as he describes metal detecting, during the pandemic when he got stuck on the floor of his house.

Now that he’s written an entertaining book, The Accidental Detectorist, he’s promised to show me the addictive quality and bucolic charms of the hobby.

“I realized that metal detecting was another way to travel,” he explains. “It’s actually time travel. When you find the objects, you’re transported back to when they came from and to the people who last touched them.”

Today his friend Andy secured permission for us to rake the rolling farmland near the Anglo-Saxon town of Framlingham, Suffolk. Britain’s most easterly county is just behind

In the meantime, this has given us an excuse to recreate a pose of Andy and Lance’s famous lunch tree, one of dozens of gnarled oaks that stand in the fields of Framlington.

Nigel, 64, a kind and caring man, particularly likes Crook’s witty dialogue. “It was one of my inspirations to write my book,” he says. “I thought it captured something about the English character – the soft humor and the scenery.”

Andy, who is jovial with sandy hair and a ruddy complexion, has been exploring these sites since 2014. His biggest find was a 3,000-year-old Bronze Age ax head on a Welsh farmhouse, but he made the headlines in 2018 when he and his friend unearthed a treasure trove of 54 “golden” coins that turned out to be props from the Detectorists.

“I’m still in therapy on this,” he smiles. We’re about to head into what he calls “the field of Roman dreams,” so I put the headphones back on for another attempt.

Andy demonstrates low, fast swings that turn into smaller circular motions when the beeps become urgent. The numbers flash on the screen and fluctuate wildly when metal is detected.

“It could be foil or gold, which is fun,” he explains.

Buttons are common, as are nails, coins, rings, bits of iron, and “shotties”, the aforementioned shotgun carriages. Worthless items are discarded as “hedge fodder”.

Most metal detecting beginners want to find a “hammered” – a handcrafted piece produced until the 17th century by striking a disc of blank metal wedged between two dies.

“I kept running into people who started after me but found them and it really pissed me off,” Nigel says. There is no doubt that metal detecting can be competitive.

“Every new field is a hope, every old one is a reality,” says Nigel.

“You learn a lot about yourself. In the beginning, I was quite childish, tapping my feet and was jealous of what other people found. It helped me grow in a way.”

Indeed, many finders insist that the thrill of a find is not about its monetary value.

It was recently plowed, leaving wheat stalks and loose soil. A flock of birds passes overhead as the sun rises. Only the whistling wind interrupts the peace.

A copse of tall trees stands on the crest of the hill to our right, where Andy thinks a Roman settlement once stood. He shows us in the distance the place where we have just arrived, where he thinks there is an old cemetery.

He found a belt hanger there – an iron pendant symbolizing a house key traditionally buried with women in Anglo-Saxon times – and believes the settlement would have faced it. My instinct is to crisscross the earth in straight lines like a tractor, but Nigel and Andy encourage the “wavy line” approach. The secret is intuition, they say.

I watch them go in opposite directions and observe their process. Andy frequently stops to dig a hole, crouching down to use a Pointer, a mini wand-like metal detector.

A former policeman, he knows friends with depression and PTSD who benefit from the hobby. “It’s soothing and you’re on your own,” he explains.

Nigel adds: “It’s a gregarious hobby – you’re with people at the start and end of the day, and out in the field – but it’s also lonely. And being in nature is healthy and therapeutic. “

Finders are encouraged to register finds of historical or cultural value with the British Museum and the Portable Antiquities Scheme, a database recording 1.6 million objects for posterity. Discoveries classified as “treasure” must be reported to local coroners within 14 days.

Nigel’s first encounter with a detector took place ten years ago near his 500-year-old cottage in Hampshire. “He must have been one of those boring fools who roam the fields in earphones and rubber boots, looking for something they never find,” he wrote. Today, he reflects: “I felt rather superior to him. I thought he was a bit of a nerd.”

But during the first lockdown, when he took longer walks, he began to wonder who had taken these same paths in previous ages. His curiosity turned into an obsession after a trip to Kent with detectorist Kris Rogers, who once found a hoard of Bronze Age ax heads now in the British Museum.

The duo unearthed a Tudor buckle made of copper alloy and camouflaged by a layer of green patina. “No one had touched it for 500 years,” recalls Nigel. Andy joins us to press another nugget of history into my hand, a fragment of a Roman coin made from a bronze and copper alloy. There is a profile of a face on the back and the tiny figures of Romulus and Remus under a she-wolf on the front.

As we passed to our final field, Nigel dug up what may be a dog tag belonging to a WWII American serviceman. He can just make out “ALIF” – for “CALIFORNIA” maybe – and the letters “3182”.

He keeps his finds in Tupperware boxes in his office. Each object is placed in a small resealable plastic bag, labeled with black marker. “Do you show them,” I ask? “Yeah, I annoy people.” “No, you educate them,” adds Andy.

Before ending the day, I ask about so-called nightjars, illegal scouts that raid fields without permission, often during hours of darkness, and sell their catch to the highest bidder.

Earlier this week a rogue metal detectorist jailed for stealing Viking treasure worth up to £5.2million told a court he bet the money he won with the treasure. Warehouseman George Powell, 40, did not declare rare coins and jewelry that had been buried for more than 1,100 years.

“Nobody knows how many of them are out there,” Nigel says. But a report by Historic England found almost a fifth of farms had been hit by peddling.

Andy is more open-minded. “Part of the problem with night owls is that archaeologists look down on metal detectors,” he says. He knows detectives who believe they have been wronged over reported discoveries, leaving them missing by hundreds, sometimes thousands of pounds.

The sun is going down in the sky so we reluctantly call it a day.

I can say that both men are a bit disappointed that we haven’t found something bigger. It is difficult to pull them out. “Just one last signal?” they ask. And, in all honesty, that’s fine with me.

TikTok Blocks Z-Library Hashtag Awaiting Hack Investigation *TorrentFreak

Publishers and authors are unhappy with Z-Library, an online repository offering millions of pirated books for free download. The site’s user base is growing rapidly, thanks in part to viral videos from TikTok users. Following a recent complaint from the Authors Guild, TikTok has banned the #zlibrary hashtag pending further review. But will it help?

While film and music piracy tends to grab the headlines, the publishing industry faces similar issues.

Almost every book ever written is available online for free, including through so-called “shadow libraries”.

Z-Library is one of the largest shadow libraries on the internet. Through a variety of domain names, the site offers over 11 million books and 84 million articles. This has attracted a stable user base and several million monthly visitors.

All books are freely accessible, but Z-Library also accepts donations. These donations provide one month of access to a variety of additional features, including more search results and the ability to send books to the Kindle ebook reader.

Publishers and authors are not happy with the site and are actively trying to limit its exposure. Just recently, the publishers won a site blocking order in France and they also regularly target the site with takedown notices.

Z-Library was also mentioned in several recommendations to the US Trade Representative’s overview of notorious piracy markets. In some cases, third-party platforms such as TikTok have also been called out.

According to the Authors Guild, Z-Library has become a very popular and high volume source of illegal ebook downloads in recent years. This growth is facilitated by users openly advertising the site on social media, TikTok included.

“The #zlibrary hashtag on popular social media platform TikTok has 4 million views, referring to the countless videos posted by middle and high school students and others around the world promoting it as a go-to place. for free ebooks,” writes the Guild. .

The USTR submission provides a detailed overview of the site and also contains author comments. Among them is NYT bestselling author Sarina Bowen, who highlights TikTok’s “role” in popularizing book piracy.

“Z-Library is killing us. A book we publish in the morning is available on Z-library at noon. All my books are up there,” Bowen says. “It’s not the only site that hurts us, but it’s the site that keeps showing up in Tiktok videos.”

TikTok responds

TikTok is not happy with this characterization. Although the Authors Guild does not recommend labeling the notorious marketplace platform, the social media platform responded to these and other rights holder complaints in a letter to the USTR.

The Chinese company stresses that it takes the concerns of intellectual property rights holders seriously. It has implemented procedures to prevent piracy and counterfeiting and has taken action in response to Z-Library’s complaint.

TikTok says it does nothing wrong and, like other online platforms, responds to takedown notices from rights holders. The company says it also “bans” problematic hashtags and after the Authors Guild complaint, #Zlibrary was blocked on the platform.

“Reducing the possibility of users discovering content that violates our Community Guidelines is of paramount importance. As a result, TikTok is proactively blocking search results for terms that violate our Community Guidelines, including terms related to counterfeit products such as #designerdupe and #designerreplicas.

“We also recently blocked search results for #zlibrary while our team evaluates content associated with this hashtag,” the platform explains.

Indeed, as of this writing, TikTok users will no longer find any content under the popular hashtag. This is a clear statement from TikTik, but it is unlikely to prove effective against the constant stream of Z-Library videos.

In fact, TikTok’s Z-Library “discovery” page remains live, and with 1.5 billion views, it’s becoming far more visible than the hashtag has ever managed. Additionally, searches in Z-Library will also return a lot of content.

This does not mean that TikTok is doing anything wrong from a legal standpoint. Similar videos also appear on other sites, including Instagram, YouTube, Twitter and elsewhere.

In its letter to the USTR, TikTok reiterates that it will take action when rights holders report problematic activity. The Authors Guild doesn’t dispute this, but they would like to see more proactive anti-piracy measures.

The good news for authors is that not all TikTok users are soulless hackers. When searching Z-Library, one can also find people who question how easily others promote piracy.

Pirate streaming site WishFlix is trying to hold its own after another DMCA notice kicked it out of GitHub. The French streaming portal has moved to a dedicated domain, hoping to make the most of its smart social media promotions on platforms such as TikTok. WishFlix is one of those sites that clearly stands out. The French streaming portal was originally hosted on GitHub and, like other sites of this nature, appears to use a pre-coded script and third-party content library to deliver embedded movies and TV shows to the public.

In order to build an audience, operators used social media as a promotional tool. This paid off as the site garnered a large following on TikTok, where one of its videos reached over a million views.

But success came with a downside. A few weeks ago, French media company StudioCanal submitted a DMCA takedown notice targeting WishFlix. Unlike other streaming portals that use ironclad hosting providers, WishFlix was hosted on the GitHub developer platform.

GitHub takes copyright infringement pretty seriously, and it’s definitely not a haven for pirate sites. However, after making some changes, the site remained widely accessible on GitHub. For a short while at least.

Two weeks after StudioCanal sent its opinion, the French anti-piracy organization ALPA intervened. Representing a wide range of entertainment companies, including major Hollywood studios, ALPA asked GitHub to remove the entire repository from its platform.

In its DMCA Notice, ALPA provided several examples of infringing videos while pointing out that there are many more.

“This entire repository is dedicated to sharing our member’s illegal movies and TV shows and should be removed as is. These are only a tiny fraction of the contents of the repository,” the notice reads.

Adding a little more weight to its warning, ALPA also pointed out that under French law, repeated copyright infringements have serious consequences. These include substantial damages and prison sentences of several years.

“If the offense is repeated, it is then punished by 6 years’ imprisonment and a fine of €1,000,000, with application of the minimum sentence of one year’s imprisonment”, writes the group.

Following this notice, operators seem to have realized that GitHub is not the ideal hosting partner for their business. Instead, they registered the dedicated domain name “wishflix.fr” to settle elsewhere.

At the time of writing, the site uses the French hosting provider OVH where the domain is also registered. This is all public information that anyone can access with just a few keystrokes.

The good news for WishFlix is that it still seems to control the GitHub repository. There is no longer infringing content hosted there, but a 404 error notice now redirects visitors to the new domain.

Return attempt

So far, the return of the site is not yet complete. There are no embedded movies on the new domain and some other things need to be sorted out as well.

WishFlix seems to be a typical example of a site that uses ‘hack as a service’ providers. It does not host any of the videos itself, but pulls them from external sources while presenting the whole thing through a precoded script.

It’s not yet clear how long the site will survive with this new setup, but it looks like the rights holders are pretty determined to take it offline.

In addition to the removal from GitHub, WishFlix’s popular TikTok account was also removed. A new TikTok account surfaced soon after, but the streaming portal has chosen Telegram as its main communication channel for now.

Convinced that pirate sites only stay online when they are making a profit, the City of London Police have decided that revenue deprivation should be a key strategy in their fight against piracy.

Launched in 2014 and monitored by the Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU), the “Infringing Websites List” (IWL) contains details of pirate sites nominated by rights holders and provides the basis for future enforcement by through escalating actions.

Once PIPCU has formed the opinion that a site is probably illegal, it sometimes comes into direct contact with the operators of the site. Warning of potential prosecution for offenses under the Fraud Act 2006, the Designs and Patents Copyright Act 1988 and even the Serious Crime Act 2007, PIPCU suggests closing as an alternative.

In recent correspondence seen by TorrentFreak, PIPCU offers to help a site operator legitimize its MP3 pirating site, but only gives 14 days notice for any further action, including “disrupting the infrastructure Internet”.

Welcome to the blacklist

Funded by the government and run by the City of London Police under the banner of Operation Creative, the IWL is backed by major rights holders including the BPI, IFPI and The Publishers Association, as well as groups international organizations such as the MPA.

The IWL is shared between brands, advertising companies, agencies and affiliates, who are informed that responsible companies boycott pirate sites because it a) protects their image and b) deprives pirate sites of the money they they need it so much. Anti-piracy groups also have access to the IWL, but despite paying the bill, ordinary people don’t have access to the Operation Creative portal to see it.

Well, in theory at least.

So how many sites are on the list?

The IWL is in a constant state of flux due to the addition of new domains and the removal of others. That being said, we believe that 1,530 domains are currently on the list, including torrent sites RARBG, 1337x, TorrentGalaxy, and YTS. The list also includes several domains referencing Pirate Bay but to our knowledge, the main domain of the site is not present.

Streaming giant Fmovies is listed multiple times in multiple areas with Bflix and Soap2Day. YouTube ripping sites such as Yout and YTMate are also blacklisted, along with many others serving specific foreign language markets.

The list seems to cover the most important targets and hundreds of areas that many people are completely unaware of. That’s on top of a few hundred more that could disappear overnight without anyone noticing, but that’s partly the purpose of the list.

All sites start slowly, but when more famous sites get blocked, sudden growth can appear out of nowhere. With fewer advertising opportunities, it’s certainly possible that sites likely to grow will throw in the towel before that happens.

Over 6,000 domains have already appeared on the IWL

The 1,530 figure was a bit of a surprise at first, as we expected many more domains to be listed. That being said, an indexing scheme used in the IWL allows us to have an informed estimate of the total number of domains targeted since its inception in 2014.

Our estimate is 6,039 domains, leading to the tentative conclusion that around 4,500 domains have been removed from the list over the years. Assuming that sites remain on the list until they stop infringing, one could conclude that after appearing on the IWL, 75% of sites either clean up their act or simply die. .

That kind of result would be something to shout about, but the IWL deals in specific areas, not sites. in itself. It is possible that a single site has had multiple domains and appeared on the list multiple times over the years. Plug-and-play sites also tend to reappear quickly with new identities and domains, further muddying the waters.

The reality is that we don’t know all the details and given the secrecy so far, that’s unlikely to change. What we do know is that the UK government is very keen to know everything and is willing to spend taxpayers’ money to find out.

Government wants data on pirate sites listed by IWL

According to the official government portal Government Online, between 1,200 and 1,500 government tenders and contracts are advertised each week. On October 10, the Intellectual Property Office launched a call for quotations for:

A tracking portal, providing ad stream data for requested websites that are considered to be involved in copyright infringement.

“This tender is being administered by the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) and the contract will be awarded and paid for by the IPO. The benefits and results of the services will be provided by the supplier to the responsible police unit Intellectual Property Crimes (PIPCU), which is a strategic partner of the IPO,” the RFP states.

“The initial term of the contract will be from date of award (following this tender process) to March 31, 2024. This is expected to be 15 or 16 months.”

Data sought by the government

The Intellectual Property Office lists several minimum requirements for its portal, including the following:

• Total number of ads and estimated ad impressions on IWL domains
• Total number of brands and total number of advertising intermediaries
• Total number of IWL domains containing advertising
• Type of advertising campaign, for example, brand name, gambling, adult or sponsored
• Ability to click on a domain and get a screenshot of the domain and ad
• Data should be visually represented by graphs and charts.
• Be able to focus on one or more areas
• Be able to focus by type of campaign, for example, brands or gambling
• Being able to focus on a particular brand
• Provide a quarterly report in a particular area such as gambling advertisements

The specs suggest that in addition to measuring the volume of ads that keep pirate sites afloat, the IPO may need data to support action against specific industry sectors, perhaps through education, persuasion or other means provided by the strategic partner, PIPCU.

The RFP states that while the IPO pays the bill, all services will be provided to PIPCU. The initial contract is expected to last 15 or 16 months, with an option to extend up to 25 months.

The maximum budget for the initial term is £5,500 (including VAT) per month and although all companies will have to bear the bidding process, it seems more than likely that White-Bullet will win the contract.

The company specializes in this type of work and recently won a new contract to maintain the database behind the list of counterfeit websites.

Finally, a paragraph in the RFP caught our eye as being a little out of the ordinary and if the claim is true, PIPCU may have a softer side that never gets publicized.

Maybe PIPCU’s contact isn’t a disaster?

The police’s Intellectual Property Crimes Unit is well known for blacklisting sites, arresting those involved in continuous piracy, seizing tens of thousands of counterfeiting-related domains, and conducting spyware operations. similar application.

Interestingly, the description of the unit by the Intellectual Property Office suggests much more than that.

“Operation Creative, for the first time in the UK, has a strong focus on early intervention aimed at engendering the principles of restorative justice as a means of providing early warnings to offenders, giving them the opportunity to develop their activities into practical legitimate”, the IPO. The concept of restorative justice has been gaining ground in British government circles for some time. The theory is that by opening lines of communication between criminals and their victims, the parties may be able to find ways to undo the harm and discover a way forward.

The problem here is that sites get blacklisted by IWL because they are heavily used for hacking, their operators have proven to be uncooperative, and in many cases their sites have already been blocked in the UK on the basis of a High Court injunction.

The suggestion that after all this they could be invited to have a cup of tea with the MPA or BPI, to discuss where it all went wrong and how to move forward, seems quite unbelievable. Times are changing, there’s no doubt, but things don’t change this a lot, surely?

If hackers do eventually get their hands on this sensitive data, it means the money people are saving by turning to illegal streams or downloads could quickly evaporate, as hackers would have the keys to their bank accounts.

Walker advised: “There is no doubt that if you want to protect your personal and financial information, as well as the safety of your family, the safe and secure way to watch content is definitely through legitimate providers. The big players are taking the security seriously and it is in their interest to ensure that there remains a safe environment in which to view content.”

Here are some of the threats people face when they turn to illegal streaming and torrenting websites…

Malware: Threats include banking Trojans which are designed to access your bank accounts and other financial information in order to steal your money.

Spyware/Adware: This malware spies on your keyboard clicks to show you particular advertisements that encourage you to click on certain links. He can also watch you secretly through your device’s camera.

Phishing: This is where people are tricked into revealing personal information, such as usernames, passwords, and credit card numbers, in an attempt to take control of user accounts and steal their money.

Fake browser or operating system updates: Generated by illegal sites to trick you into downloading something useful to cyber criminals.

Besides risking your device’s security and personal information, accessing illegal streams or downloading fake torrents is illegal.

And even if you think you can escape the wrath of rightsholders, in recent years program makers have gone the extra mile to crack down on copyright infringers.

Last year, Virgin Media subscribers in the UK who allegedly pirated the Hollywood film Ava – which could be viewed legally on Netflix – received a letter warning them that they could be fined £800 for illegally watching the film.

They were told to pay a hefty fine or face legal action.

Along with the tournament, Chivalry II is also kicking off its second Halloween event today. This will last until November 1, during which time the battlefield will take on a more haunted look with special decorations and props. Players will also be able to get some cool Halloween-themed items, like pumpkin helmets and ammo, and transportable coffins. Coffins can apparently be used as weapons thrown at enemies, so have fun with that.
