Why use a VPN and my goals

This review opportunity came at a good time for me. I had to fly to the United States for two weeks for some press trips.

By using a VPN, I was able to:

  • Improved security when using hotel WiFi networks, as all my data is encrypted.
  • Access UK servers allowing me to bypass various regional restrictions including streaming content and other UK specific services.
  • Have a UK IP address to avoid website and search engine regionalization while I continue to work overseas.

One of the cool features of PIA is that they have special servers dedicated to streaming. Many general servers are compatible with Netflix, but you can select those optimized servers for the best overall experience.

Saving user data

A VPN is supposed to be private, the name suggests, but there is always some concern about your VPN’s privacy.

Some people suggest that you should only use a VPN based in a country outside of the 5-eyes/14-eyes agreement. Personally, I think you must be doing something nefarious enough to be concerned about this.

Anyway, Private Internet Access says it’s not a problem for them. They say:

At PIA, we have designed our operations to prevent this from happening in the first place. There are no newspapers. No identifying information can be collected, regardless of the force applied. There are several companies that claim not to log in, but still do at the end of the day. On the other hand, we have public court records to prove that we do not record anything, available for everyone to read (pages 11-12).

They keep highlighting

The question remains what to do if PIA is coerced into something – or rather, if the authorities try to coerce PIA into something, as was the case with Yahoo recently, when the NSA forced it to spy on its own users. .

There is a precedent for this, and that is sink choosing to close its operations instead of selling its users (specifically, selling Edward Snowden). It’s also exactly what Private Internet Access once did, when Russia demanded that we start recording our users’ identities, after seizing PIA servers.

Our response was immediately stop operations in Russia

PIA has also been independently audited by Deloitte to verify the no-logs policy.

I don’t imagine the government will be interested in anything I do online, but I’m sure PIA won’t divulge any of my information.

Used

Windows app

Windows (or macOS) will be the best way to use the VPN for most people on a computer.

With this, you have the most control over how the VPN works. The number of parameters is considerable.

Wireguard versus OpenVPN

Wireguard is a new protocol that is significantly more efficient than the more common OpenVPN. Using this protocol should improve speeds and reduce

Split tunneling and automation

This is a handy feature if you want to be selective with what connects to the VPN. An obvious choice would be any clients you use to download content. You can configure the VPN so that only your torrent client goes through the VPN while all your internet activity remains normal.

Chromium Browser

Traditionally with a VPN, I just install the Windows app and leave it at that. With competing services, I sometimes find that logging in and out of the Windows application can break my network connection.

Recently, I discovered that I wanted to be more selective about what I wanted to use the VPN for. So there’s no need to bother switching my entire connection to the VPN and using a browser extension instead.

I’ve used the built-in Opera VPN for this before, but more often than not it’s extremely slow.

Private Internet Access browser extensions are excellent. You have the choice between Chrome, Firefox and Opera.

Once installed, all you have to do is log in and select the options you want.

You have two security options, 7 privacy options and 6 tracking options.

I often use a VPN to temporarily get rid of tracking while I test how websites work or search results. Therefore, all tracking options are perfect for me.

Signing in through Chrome seems to be instantaneous and performance is excellent. With the automatic UK server, I achieved a speed of 551/35 Mbps for uploading and downloading. This matches the speed my Virgin Media connection can provide.

Switching to a US server, I still achieved high speeds with 511/36Mbps, and the ping went up to 91ms

Android app

As you’d expect, PIA has an Android and iOS app. I find these tend to be useful when you also want to block the ads and tracking that plague websites on mobile.

I’ve also used the Android app with Android TV on the Nvidia Shield, which allows me to bypass regional restrictions and also access streaming apps that aren’t available in the UK.

Throughput / Speeds / Streaming

PIA using Wireguard with local server

A good VPN needs fast servers. I have a 500mbps Virgin connection at home and I won’t use a VPN if I see a big drop in speeds. Speeds obviously vary by country, and the further the server is from your location, the worse the performance.

However, the performance of Private Internet Access has been excellent. I’m based in the North of the UK and the speeds I’ve achieved with the Windows app are:

  • Manchester server: 519 / 35 Mbps and ping 23 ms
  • Amsterdam server: 445 / 35 Mbps and ping 26 ms
  • Liechtenstein: 523 / 35 Mbps & ping 36 ms
  • United States Washington: 482/34 Mbps and 94 ms ping
  • Optimized streaming on the US East Coast: 472/34 Mbps and 118 pings
  • Hong Kong: 307 / 16 Mbps & 302 ping
  • Australia Sydney: 213 / 12 Mbps & 352 ping

I tested several of the options optimized for streaming, and all worked perfectly. For streaming, I mainly want US servers because there are only US streaming services that I use occasionally, like HBO Max. Then when I was in the US I used the UK servers to access the BBC.

American server

Globally

Private Internet Access has been around for years and is the most well-known brand in the VPN industry.

So it’s no surprise that my experience with the service was flawless.

Although I don’t use VPNs much, they can be incredibly useful, and I think £44 for 28 months is a bargain

“You fat disgusting pig… What a sad little man you are.” Here are some of the text messages a disgruntled social worker sent to a lawyer who handled her dismissal at a major tertiary hospital.

Francesca Lynch also left a series of voicemails where only the ticking of a clock could be heard, as well as creating fake Facebook profiles to send threatening messages to the man.

It was the conduct that ultimately removed Lynch from social work and ordered her to pay $30,000 in costs for a Social Workers Disciplinary Tribunal hearing that she did not attend.

The court also found that she had entered into an inappropriate relationship with a Salvation Army client, who was out on bail and for whom she was a social worker.

Lynch worked at Canterbury District Health Board as a social worker from 2017 to 2019, but an internal investigation into her conduct in 2019 ultimately led to her employment being terminated.

A lawyer and hospital legal adviser handled the mediation, after which Lynch targeted him with a series of posts via Facebook and by phone and email attacking his personal appearance and professional abilities.

The man has the name removed and was referred to as Mr. X in the court ruling released on Thursday.

He told a hearing in June that after Lynch left Christchurch Hospital and started working for the Salvation Army, he started receiving messages on Facebook from apparent strangers.

“You disgusting pig! You won’t be at your post much longer,” said one.

Another post from a profile named ‘Willie Morris’ called Mr X a ‘grotesque and disgustingly ugly person’, whose karma would ‘bite twice as hard on your fat ass’.

Another said Mr X must ‘have been bullied at some point in your life’ because you ‘get immersed in evil behavior and get away with it’.

Mr. X said he reported the messages to the police and NetSafe and informed the sender he suspected to be Lynch.

“Of course you have Hahaha,” was the response, along with, “The police have better things to do than listen to your [sic] little mouth leaves again”.

Mr X said Willie Morris’ Facebook profile continued to send him direct messages calling him ‘fat’ and ‘obese’.

Further comments were made from Lynch’s own Facebook profile on a news article about another labor dispute that Mr. X had handled at the time.

In November 2020, he received a series of voicemails on his cellphone, one with just the sound of a clock, but others were long tirades from a woman he recognized as Lynch.

“We all know you were bullied as a child. Look at you, you are a freakish fat pig who is totally inadequate in everything you do in your role,” the message read.

“I told you I was powerful. Let’s see what happens now, huh? Watch events unfold drastically.

“The nightmare has only just begun for you, has just begun.”

Another message left minutes after the first read, “Hey, and one more thing mate. You know what? You can’t do anything about me. This must be making you extremely angry, confused, worried and anxious.”

The Social Workers Disciplinary Tribunal found that the Facebook messages were sent alongside emails to Mr. X and used similar language.

Because of this, the court was satisfied that Lynch was responsible for all social media posts, according to the ruling.

They also discovered that voicemails left on Mr X’s phone could be linked to Lynch, after hearing recordings of it during the hearing earlier this year.

“Social workers are expected to confront and manage conflict situations on a daily basis. They are expected to do so with professionalism and respect,” the ruling reads.

“His use of fake Facebook profiles to harass a former colleague and to publicly post alleged issues with a former employer is a totally inappropriate way to address any concerns Ms Lynch may have had.

“Put simply, in the opinion of the court, Ms. Lynch’s conduct was disgraceful.”

However, it was not just Lynch’s harassment of Mr. X that the court considered when it revoked his registration and ordered him to pay $20,110 for Professional Conduct Committee fees and $12,793 to the court.

Conduct at the Salvation Army also came under scrutiny

Her conduct at the Salvation Army in Christchurch, where she worked after leaving hospital, was also examined under the microscope.

As a social worker, she collaborated with clients as part of a community housing team, working with people who had issues of abuse or incarceration.

A large number of messages were exchanged between Lynch and a man known only as Mr. Z, many of them outside working hours.

“The number of messages and calls exchanged between Ms. Lynch and Mr. Z shows that something went on beyond a purely professional relationship,” the court said.

“There is little to no explanation for the rest of the times they met or exchanged calls or texts.”

Her employer met with her on several occasions to discuss professional boundaries and how her relationship with Mr. Z was perceived by other staff members.

“Furthermore, the court also considered as an aggravating factor the vulnerability of Mr. Z, regardless of his charm or manipulation. He was a client of the Salvation Army due to a history of trauma and he was in bail.”

Ultimately, the court found that between Mr. X’s harassment and the inappropriate relationship with Mr. Z, Lynch was no longer fit to be a social worker in New Zealand.

“Her conduct demonstrates that Ms. Lynch lacks appreciation or is willing to disregard professional boundaries. She demonstrated a lack of respect for proper professional conduct as a social worker.”

This story was first published by the New Zealand Herald.

Data-driven thinkingis written by members of the media community and contains fresh insights into the digital revolution in media.

Today’s column is written by Michael Morris, co-founder of Hyperlocology.

The digitization of advertising has unleashed a torrent of easily measurable statistics for marketers to measure performance. This has led to a category of partner software that helps brands and retailers understand how their campaigns are performing across each channel by evaluating KPIs such as clicks, cost per acquisition, and conversion rates.

These KPIs have their place in the marketing strategy. But digital marketing has become too focused on proxy KPIs instead of the metric that matters most: revenue.

The search for digital KPIs has led marketers to make strategic mistakes. They seek out conversions that don’t generate additional revenue, preserve outdated strategies by focusing on metrics rather than processes, and cut costs when it would be more useful to focus on revenue gains.

Drive out bad conversions

Many marketing teams measure their success based on numerical metrics such as CPA, CPL, ROI, and ROAS. As a result, marketers’ efforts have become more focused on gaining attribution (through various lower funnel tactics) for online conversions to meet often inflated KPI goals.

These indirect measures do not capture additional revenue. Instead, they attempt to capture the impact of a specific form of marketing that lends itself to final touch attribution.

For example, consider a retailer with five locations in a designated market area (DMA). The retailer pays a marketing agency to calibrate advertising in this DMA. If the agency is struggling to achieve its main KPI – increasing sales attributed to advertising – it can artificially increase this number by retargeting former clients or looking for lower-funnel conversions that are likely to produce without marketing. The agency then seems to have done its job of strengthening marketing performance, but the brand does not benefit from incremental income.

The independent variable in performance analytics should be a real test of marketing quality – like creative, daily parts, even product or service offerings – and not just budget allocation and audience targeting manipulation that focuses on soft targets such as repeat customers.

Preserve outdated policies

Focusing on performance KPIs also allows ineffective strategies to persist.

For example, agencies have historically charged clients based on the number of full-time employees needed to handle an assignment. As long as the agency meets its metrics, the client can continue to pay for their agency engagement. But the status quo can be woefully inefficient, as automation can now tackle many tasks that agencies once had to hire full-time employees to handle.

Automation can help by allowing marketers to set up more granular campaigns. For example, it can help brick-and-mortar marketers set up campaigns by location, which would otherwise be impossible depending on the headcount required. Setting up these more granular campaigns automatically generates stronger results and saves human talent time that would otherwise be wasted searching for digital vanity metrics.

Thus, one of two improvements should occur in marketing relationships: either the price of labor should come down, or the agency should reinvest this free human time in improving creative, identifying new market opportunities or other tasks that require human ingenuity.

If marketers are myopic and evaluate marketing strategy based solely on performance KPIs, they risk missing out on these opportunities for efficiency and productivity gains. It is not enough to consult the metrics on a dashboard. Marketers need to look at the human processes driving these metrics.

Prioritize efficiency over progress

Finally, even though marketers use performance KPIs to drive real business process improvements, these metrics often incentivize efficiency at the expense of growing the business and enriching relationships with existing customers. .

Consider a performance marketing strategy that involves driving more conversions on Instagram while lowering the cost per acquisition. Apparently, this strategy can work well. More conversions happen, and the advertiser spends less to get them, generating a higher ROI. But that often happens because technology providers or agencies have gotten better at jumping ahead of conversions that would have happened without advertising.

This focus on efficiency creates a vicious circle. Advertisers learn to expect unreasonable CPAs. Agencies and vendors are under pressure to meet these expectations, so they opt for the easy wins. The marketing dollars keep pouring in, but the advertiser is getting more efficient at advertising on Instagram without really growing their business, and the agency will eventually hit a ceiling when it comes to effectively targeting leads. easy.

To guard against this chain of error, marketers should check their marketing measurement program to ensure that it does not allow distortion through the pursuit of hollow wins. They need to nurture customer relationships throughout the funnel rather than relying on bottom-of-funnel tactics that often give the appearance of efficiency while brand value quietly declines.

Earlier this week, Kylah Spring stood in front of a crowd of University of Kentucky students gripped by what she was about to say. It had been less than 48 hours since a white student hurled a torrent of racial slurs at Spring by punching, kicking and biting her – a moment captured in a viral video.

At Monday night’s protest, Spring spoke to the woman accused of assaulting her.

“You will not break my spirit and you will be held accountable for your actions,” she said.

Police and university officials said accountability was already underway. On Wednesday, University of Kentucky President Eli Capilouto said Sophia Rosing, the 22-year-old who college police have charged with disorderly conduct, public intoxication, fourth-degree assault and third-degree assault on a police officer, had been permanently banned from Campus. The incident rocked the Lexington, Kentucky campus and thrust the university into the national spotlight.

“I want to emphasize that this behavior was disgusting and devastating to our community. We stand with our students who have been targeted by this unacceptable hostility and violence,” Capilouto wrote Wednesday in an email to university students and staff.

Rosing’s attorney, Fred Peters, did not respond to a Washington Post request for comment, but on Tuesday he said BNC News that he was “putting her on some sort of treatment program and sensitivity program to help her through this.”

“She’s a very, very embarrassed and humiliated young woman,” Peters said.

Around 1 a.m. Sunday, Spring was working reception at Boyd Hall when Rosing, who police would describe as “very drunk,” entered the residence. Spring said she and other students tried to help the woman, who then allegedly attacked them. The video appears to show Rosing repeatedly calling Spring the n-word while trying to punch her as Spring grabbed Rosing’s arms to keep her at bay.

“Could you stop, please?” Spring asked her.

“No,” Rosing said, as Spring replied, “I don’t get paid enough for this.”

Minutes later, college police arrived at the residence hall where an officer heard Rosing repeat the n-word to a group of black women, a police report said. After the officer took her away, she reportedly told him she “had a lot of money” and was getting “special treatment.” When the officer ordered him to sit in a chair, Rosing kicked him and bit his hand, according to the report.

Rosing was imprisoned at the Fayette County Detention Center. Records show she tied the knot the following night.

University officials said they temporarily suspended Rosing hours after learning what happened. On Tuesday, Peters told NBC News that his client was voluntarily withdrawing from college. A day later, Capilouto sent an email informing students and staff that Rosing was no longer a student and that he had determined that she would not be eligible to re-enroll.

“As a community working wholeheartedly to prevent racist violence, we must also commit to holding people accountable for their actions,” Capilouto said in his post.

Spring said she tries to get through it all with the help of her family and classmates. On Monday evening, she and dozens of others gathered outside a campus library to peacefully protest in what was billed as an anti-racism march. During the protest, people chanted “Black lives matter!” and “No justice, no peace!” according to kentucky core, the university’s student newspaper.

Spring addressed the crowd and cameras at the event, specifically addressing “my black community in the UK”.

“I see you, I feel you and I am with you. I matter, you matter and we matter. We will be stronger,” she said. “I would like to leave you with a piece of advice. As Michelle Obama once said, when they go down…”

She held out her arms, inviting the crowd to finish.

“We go high!” they answered.

In conclusion, Spring told them to continue to approach the situation with grace and humility. Hold your heads up high and lean on each other “as we heal ourselves and our community,” she said.

As the crowd cheered and applauded her, she wiped tears from her eyes.

San Francisco: After purging his Twitter, Elon Musk reportedly assembled his own small team — of friends and confidants — and tasked them with implementing his vision for the social media platform.

Apparently it includes Sriram Krishnan, an Indian-born software engineer and former Twitter executive who left the company last year, according to a BBC report.

Last week, Krishnan, who now works at venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz or a16z, tweeted that he was “temporarily helping Mr. Musk”, right after former CEO Parag Agrawal and CEO were unceremoniously fired. other leaders of Indian origin.

It is not immediately clear in what capacity Krishnan will join Twitter, the BBC said, adding that when contacted for comment, Krishnan said he “cannot help with anything related to Twitter”.

It’s also hard to say how close his association with Musk is at this point, though reports have repeatedly described him as part of his “inner circle.”

In a 2021 interview with a YouTube channel called Silicon Valley Girl, Krishnan said he and his wife Aarthi Ramamurthy first met Musk when he helped out with “something Twitter-related” there. a few years ago and that they had “built a relationship through it”. .

The couple also met Musk during a private tour of SpaceX’s California headquarters “several years ago,” according to The New York Times.

But the biggest exchange between them came in February 2021 when Musk appeared on a talk show the couple hosted on Clubhouse.

Social media erupted in disbelief – the world’s richest man had just shown up on an invite-only app for an exclusive – and the show began trending strongly, the BBC reported.

The Good Time Show, which has since moved to other platforms, continues to be extremely popular in the United States. The podcast offers insight into the overlapping worlds of internet culture, politics, and the latest developments in Silicon Valley, where Krishnan and Ramamurthy are well-known personalities.

Marc Andreessen, co-founder of a16z, says Mr Krishnan is “perhaps the only person in the world to have held leadership positions at the three biggest social platforms of our time”, according to the website. ‘company. Besides Twitter, the 37-year-old has worked at Microsoft, Yahoo, Snap and Facebook in the past.

Ramamurthy worked at Facebook and Netflix before starting two of his own companies.

Together they have been described as a well-connected “tech power couple”.

Krishnan was born in Chennai into a “very traditional” middle-income household. His life changed when he convinced his father to buy him a computer – a luxury in the late 1990s, he told the YouTube channel.

“It cost around 60,000 to 70,000 rupees, a big chunk of my dad’s paycheck,” he said during the 2021 interview. “I told him I would use it for my studies.”

But he still had no internet because a dial-up connection was expensive and unaffordable.

So he bought coding books instead to learn the basics and practiced every night.

Krishnan met Ramamurthy online in 2002 when he was studying engineering at Anna University in Chennai. “A mutual friend wanted to start a coding project, so he decided to bring the two cheesiest people he knew — me and Aarthi — on board,” he said earlier on the YouTube channel.

“One of our first dates was watching a bit-torrent copy of a 1999 Silicon Valley movie in my little bedroom,” Krishnan said in the interview.

Their big break came a few months later when one of Krishnan’s Microsoft blog posts was noticed by an executive at the company, who then hired the couple in 2005.

In 2007 Krishnan moved to the United States and Ramamurthy joined him six months later.

After working at Microsoft, the couple moved on to other big tech companies. They obtained American citizenship in 2017.

Last December, they began their careers as podcasters — a decision born out of pandemic-fueled boredom, Krishnan has explained in the past.

So they decided to head to the Clubhouse, which has become popular during the pandemic, to have conversations about the tech space. The interviews are woven with analysis and candid repartee with experts, including Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, the BBC said.

Krishnan has been an open admirer of Musk in the past, describing him as an “inspirational person and an iconic founder”.

He also openly supported Musk’s vision for Twitter and criticized practices such as de-platforming on the microblogging website.

“Having extrajudicial internet cops driving law enforcement on your platform is the path to dystopian authoritarianism,” he wrote on Twitter last month.

There is speculation that Musk could have convinced Mr Krishnan – a cryptocurrency expert – to integrate his bitcoin doge into Twitter, the BBC report added.

A man who tried to choke his girlfriend after she refused to eat dinner he cooked for her has been jailed for a total of three years.

Stephen Coveney-Ryan turned on Roisin MacNeilis after she invited him to her home in Donegal Town after he became homeless after the couple met at Dublin’s Bus Aras a few weeks earlier.

He threatened to kill her and her family and “bury them in a shallow grave” after they exploded one day in a fit of rage.

Coveney Ryan, 26, appeared in Letterkenny Circuit Court where he pleaded guilty to threatening to kill Ms MacNeilis, assaulting her and producing a knife.

The couple had met a few weeks earlier on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2021, by chance at Dublin’s Bus Aras and stayed in touch via text. However, Coveney-Ryan called Ms MacNeilis one day and said he was homeless.

She invited him to stay with her at her home in Donegal Town and they started a relationship.

However, over the weeks, Ms MacNeilis claimed he had changed and had become aggressive and jealous.

On July 10, the accused finally broke down and attacked Ms. MacNeilis.

The court was told the defendant had cooked dinner, but Ms MacNeilis said she was not hungry but decided to eat a bowl of cereal instead.

He went for a walk and when he returned they first went to separate bedrooms, but Coveney Ryan then climbed into bed next to Mrs. MacNeilis and then began to attack her.

He put his elbow in her neck then put his hands around her neck and she struggled to breathe. Ms MacNeilis said she thought she was going to die at this point.

She managed to get to the front door but there were no keys and he followed her into the bathroom and started choking her again.

He constantly yelled at Ms MacNeilis who was eight weeks pregnant at this point. He told her that she was not fit to be a mother and that he was going to drown her and kill them both.

During the attack, he is also accused of making a fishing knife.

The torrent of abuse continued before she finally managed to jump out the window and he could only follow her a short distance as he was only wearing his boxer shorts.

She drove into the woods around Harvey’s Point around Donegal town and managed to charge her phone and she started getting threatening messages and calls.

In the calls, he said he was going to chop her up and feed her pigs and that he would also kill her parents and put them in the trunk of the car and then bury them in a shallow grave.

She told her parents about her ordeal and on July 12 she contacted Gardai when she was in a very distressed state and made a statement of complaint.

Coveney-Ryan, with an address in O’Clerigh Avenue, Donegal Town but originally from Co Tipperary, was arrested and taken to Ballyshannon Garda station for interview.

The court was told the defendant admitted to beating the victim, but suffered from mental health issues and disagreed with many of the allegations presented to him, including the choking of his victim.

However, he later admitted to the allegations and claimed he was ‘psychotic’ that night and could not believe he had said such things to Ms MacNeilis.

The court was told that the defendant was from Tipperary and had previously been charged with various incidents including burglary, theft, intoxication, breach of a restraining order, possession of drugs and use of threatening and abusive language.

His solicitor, Mr David Byrnes, said his client was much calmer thanks to the messages he left on his victim’s phone, saying he was also visibly upset when he heard the recordings again.

Mr Byrnes added that psychologist Dr Kevin Lambe interviewed his client and said he was a man who needed help guiding him through the psychotic episodes he was going through.

While on remand in prison, Coveney Ryan also completed a number of courses, including an ‘alternative to violence’ course and an Irish Red Cross course.

Mr Byrnes added that his client’s behavior was unacceptable and had no place in society, but asked Judge John Aylmer to work in rehabilitation and suggested that was the most appropriate direction.

Ms MacNeilis sat at the back of the courtroom breastfeeding the couple’s baby girl while a Garda read her victim impact statement in the silent court.

It told how she felt like she had gone from being the luckiest woman around to living in a horror show when she met Coveney Ryan.

She said how she spent time working with the homeless and couldn’t understand how Stephen treated her so badly when she took him in.

She added that she had hoped to spend the rest of her life with Stephen, but now wonders if it was all real and wonders if she will be able to trust anyone again.

Worryingly, she also admitted she fears for herself and her daughter when her ex-partner is released from prison.

In passing sentence, Judge John Aylmer said the fact that a knife was produced during the incident only added to the terror of the victim and he placed it in the middle bracket of these offenses meriting a sentence of five years in prison before mitgation.

By way of mitigation, he said he accepted his admission of guilt, guilty plea and remorse as genuine, noting that he had taken a number of courses in prison.

Judge Aylmer noted that Coveney Ryan had a difficult upbringing and was diagnosed with an emotionally unstable personality disorder.

Reflecting his guilty plea and remorse, Judge Aylmer said he was reducing the sentence to four years and also suspending the final 12 months of the sentence to aid his rehabilitation.

The sentence was also backdated to when Coveney Ryan was incarcerated, while Judge Aylmer also ordered the defendant to abstain from alcohol and drugs and to comply with the prison resettlement program .

How long will Rishi Sunak last? https://www.tittorrents.com/how-long-will-rishi-sunak-last/ Fri, 28 Oct 2022 14:08:05 +0000 https://www.tittorrents.com/how-long-will-rishi-sunak-last/ Photo by Dan Kitwood/Getty Images It would generally be strange, not to say discourteous, to ask, just over a week later, how long the new Prime Minister could possibly last. It would generally be strange, not to say discourteous, to ask, just over a week later, how long the new Prime Minister could possibly last. But this is the era of short stays. Therese May and Boris Johnson managed for three years each and Liz Truss only 50 days. Rishi Sunak now leads a fragmented and restless party, and so it’s more than embarrassing to wonder how long he might have.

There are early signs that the Conservative Party knows it needs to calm down. Sunak as Prime Minister and Jeremy Hunt as Chancellor are the most serious faces a Tory government has presented in some time. The former was fluent in his first outing at Premier’s Questions and his backbench support was united and vocal.

The opportunity for reinvention has been tarnished, no doubt, by the crazy nomination of Suella Braverman. Whether or not she’s a security risk, which is quite the question to ask a Home Secretary, she’s just not very good. Braverman doesn’t speak for a wide constituency of capable rivals. She is eminently ignorant and should have been left in the doldrums. His nomination, however, is a clue to what lurks beneath the surface. The Conservative Party has normalized chaotic rebellion. It won’t take much to rekindle him.

Even if the party remains intact for part or all of his premiership, Sunak could still be just a stopgap, the man who was forced to hold the package in the brief interlude when the music of the conservative civil war has stopped. The critical event will be the next general election, which is due to be held no later than January 2025 but is likely, with Christmas being a bad time for a campaign, to take place in late fall 2024.

Sunak has some time to establish himself and he will likely be helped by a tightening in opinion polls (which recently gave Labor a lead of more than 30 percentage points). His party’s performance in this election, and more importantly, his own intentions thereafter, could have a profound bearing on how long it takes for the Conservatives to return as a serious contender for power.

It has become customary for the leader who loses a general election to disappear immediately. This has become true not only for opposition leaders, but also for former prime ministers. The last prime minister to stay to fight the next election after an electoral defeat was Harold Wilson 48 years ago, in 1974. Former prime ministers include Liz Truss, Boris Johnson, Therese MayTony Blair and Margaret Thatcher were all eliminated by their party while in government. Gordon Brown, John Major and Jim Callaghan all resigned after losing an election and David Cameron resigned after losing a referendum. None of them continued after their defeat to feed their party through the opposition.

If it is assumed in Tory circles that Sunak will not emulate Wilson, succession will soon become an issue, especially if the Tories continue to trail Labor in the polls, which, given the extent of the future income, they are bound to make. The obvious best hope for the party would be if it regains its position enough that Keir Starmer cannot have an outright majority and becomes prime minister at the head of a hobbled administration. If the Tories had the discipline and Sunak the political patience, he might even be able to emulate Wilson all the way by returning to power in the next election.

However, there is virtually no chance that the Conservatives will have the discipline for this. Their poker faces will likely crack before they even get past Sunak but, sure enough, they’ll descend into chaos once they’re out of office. Finally, then, the Conservative Party will be freed to have the conversation about what it really is and for who it really is that has been so brutally interrupted by the need to be the real government of the country. Does the party want to be the socially inclusive but fiscally brutal party of David Cameron and George Osborne? Or the spendthrift, anti-establishment force of Dominic Cummings and Boris Johnson? Or perhaps the libertarian model of Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng?

Perhaps the still ill-defined Sunak will find another variety of conservatism to add to the mix. From the proof of his conference But, spoken an age ago in February 2022 when he was chancellor, Sunak is Truss-esque on regulation and size of state but Cameron-esque on fiscal conservatism. It’s not a mix likely to survive a harsh collision with reality and Sunak will instead react to events. He is, after all, best known as a politician for the state’s vast pandemic relief packages.

Whoever he ends up becoming prime minister, Sunak probably won’t be able to deflect the coming torrent. The Conservative Party is tired of being in government and the people are tired. It’s time for him to leave and consider whether he wants to get into culture wars with Kemi Badenoch, a civil war with Johnson, something of the night with Dominic Raab or an all-out war with Braverman. The obvious best decision would be to beg Sunak to stay, but it turned into a self-defeating party.

Spent hours looking for a torrent file, but uTorrent client refused to download it? Is uTorrent failing to connect to peers when you start the downloading process annoying you? Many factors can contribute to this problem, ranging from the torrent file you are using to issues with the uTorrent client. How can we figure out what the problem is?

In this article, we will explain why uTorrent is not downloading files or having trouble connecting to peers and how to fix it.

Why is uTorrent client not downloading files or stuck when connecting to peers?

uTorrent often fails to download files and gets stuck when connecting to peers due to interference from your antivirus, your ISP blocking torrent downloads, incorrect uTorrent client settings, or the torrent file itself dead. What should you do to fix this problem?

To fix uTorrent not downloading files or stuck on connecting to peers, you can whitelist uTorrent in Windows Firewall or your anti-virus settings, unblock restrictions set by your ISP, troubleshoot issues with trackers, enable a VPN, or change uTorrent client settings. When all else fails, it is always possible to switch to another torrent client.

Below we have explained how to apply the above fixes to fix this uTorrent issue.

First, apply the preliminary checks

First, perform the following preliminary checks to rule out minor issues that may have contributed to the error:

  1. Make sure your internet is connected and working properly. Troubleshoot all internet related issues if they exist.
  2. Restart your router and perform a speed test to make sure your internet connection is stable.
  3. Some VPNs also block peer connection when downloading torrent files, so it’s best to disable your VPN if you have one running on your device.
  4. Alternatively, if you’re having this problem when you’re not using a VPN, you can enable one and see if that fixes it.
  5. Often the seeds or peers are not immediately available. So, let the download run in the background for a few hours and check if the process starts after some time.

If the above preliminary checks fail to resolve the issue, apply the following fixes.

1. Check for Torrent File Specific Issues

Maybe the problem is not with your uTorrent client but with the torrent file itself, preventing your torrent client from starting the download process. To rule out this possibility, download another torrent file and see if it works this time.

If so, the problem lies with the torrent file. For this reason, you have to look for another torrent file on torrent websites to download your desired content. Once you find the working torrent file, you should be able to download files with uTorrent successfully.

On the other hand, if the problem persists with every torrent file you try to download using uTorrent, this is a more serious issue that needs to be investigated further.

Restart your uTorrent client after making each change explained below; otherwise, they may not take effect.

2. Check for interference from your ISP

Does your internet service provider allow you to download BitTorrent files? Unfortunately, most ISPs don’t. This may also be the case for you, causing the peer’s connection to hang and your download to stop. If you are using an internet connection at school or work, where such downloading is prohibited, you are more likely to experience this.

While switching ISP providers is the best solution, especially if you download torrent files frequently, hiding BitTorrent traffic is a quick fix if you don’t want to go that route. Thanks to uTorrent, you can easily do that with just one click.

Launch the uTorrent client, go to the Choice tab at the top left, then select Preferences.

Then click on the BitTorrent tab in the left sidebar of Preferences the window. Finally, select Strength in the Outgoing drop-down menu in the Protocol encryption section.

Next, enable port forwarding or port mapping to ensure that your network firewall is not interfering with the connection. To do this, go to Link tab in the left panel, and check the box Enable UPnP Port Mapping and Enable NAT-PMP Port Mapping boxes.

3. Exclude interference from your Windows firewall or antivirus

The Windows Defender firewall or antivirus program can also block uTorrent traffic. It is therefore imperative to exclude this possibility. The following fixes will help you do that:

  • Add the uTorrent client to the whitelist of your Windows Defender Firewall to prevent it from blocking the connection.
  • Temporarily disable your antivirus if you are using one. If you can’t do that, you should at least whitelist the uTorrent client through your antivirus settings.
  • Move towards Options > Preferences and select the Link tab in the left panel. On this page, check the box to Add an exception to Windows Firewall.

4. Troubleshoot issues with trackers

There may be an issue with some torrent tracking servers not being able to track available seeds and peers, causing peers to hang on connection. Therefore, you should rule out tracking issues. To do this, select the file blocked from downloading and go to Trackers tongue.

After that, apply the following fixes:

  1. If specific trackers are having connection issues, update them so they can find better peers. Simply right click on the tracker that is having issues and select Tracking updates.

  2. If a few trackers are still stuck after updating them, right click on them and select Delete tracker from the menu.

  3. The next step is to add torrent trackers with high availability in the uTorrent client. So, find and copy torrent trackers from any trusted website (such as FossBytes). Next, right-click on the file blocked while downloading in uTorrent client and select Properties.

After that, paste the copied list of torrent trackers at the end of the Trackers in the Properties window.

5. Try the network configuration test

If none of the above fixes solve the problem, you should run the uTorrent network configuration test, which will configure the uTorrent client to provide the best performance. In most cases, this increases download speed, but can also fix stuck download issues.

Follow these steps to run the configuration test:

  1. Open the uTorrent client.
  2. Go to the Choice tab and select Installation guide. (You can also open the setup guide window by pressing CTRL+G)

  3. Select the test location closest to you from the drop-down menu next to Bandwidth.
  4. Click it Run tests button.

  5. Click on save and close once the test is complete.

uTorrent client still stuck on peer connection? Try alternatives

Hopefully applying the above fixes will resolve interrupted download or stuck peers on connection issues on uTorrent. If these fixes don’t work and uTorrent fails to download a particular file, you can switch to another torrent client. You can try qBittorrent, Tixati and Transmission, some of the best alternatives to uTorrent.
